The country has experienced many great battles as it is a portion of the Ottoman Empire. The country has greatly struggled for its freedom from the Turks; however, it was centuries after gaining its freedom. This was brought about the Russian-Turkish war which the Russians won.

The freedom that they were able to attain was not the end of their participation in wars. The First World War was brought about by the assassination of the Serbian nationalist Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. The assassination instigated the war between Austria and Serbia. Much to everyone’s dismay, the war broke out and millions of casualties happened all over Europe and the rest of the world. The infantry was overpowered though by axis forces on the front that the army had to withdraw and retreat towards the Adriatic Sea. It was with the combined efforts of the Serbian army and the forces of France, England, Russia, Italy, and the USA that they were able to attain victory.

With any war, casualties are expected. Serbia lost 28% of its population during the First World War and that problem has yet to be resolved. 58% were male which also contributed to their population problem.
