The Hebrew language is unique and has very specific origins and characteristics.

The Origins and Spread of Hebrew

The modern word “Hebrew” is derived from the word “ivri” which in turn may be based upon the root “`avar” meaning “to cross over”. The related name Ever occurs in Genesis 10:21 and possibly means “the one who traverses”. It is known by Jews as the “holy language.” Hebrew persevered along the ages as the main language for written purposes by all Jewish communities around the world for a large range of uses; this meant not only that well-educated Jews in all parts of the world could correspond in a mutually intelligible language, and that books and legal documents published or written in any part of the world could be read by Jews in all other parts, but that an educated Jew could travel and converse with Jews in distant places, just as priests and other educated Christians could once converse in Latin.

A Brief Overview of the Diverse Culture of Israel

Hebrew is one of the official languages of Israel along with Arabic. Israel is a major player in the world economy and stands as a Superpower today. The state of Israel offers much in terms of culture, art and history to the world. Israel’s diverse culture stems from the diversity of the population: Jews from around the world have brought their cultural and religious traditions with them, creating a melting pot of Jewish customs and beliefs. Israel is the only country in the world where life revolves around the Hebrew calendar. Work and school holidays are determined by the Jewish holidays, and the official day of rest is Saturday, the Jewish Sabbath. Israelis literature revolves around poetry and is influenced heavily by western culture just as its music is influenced by Greek and Arabic rhythms. Tel Aviv, often called “the city that never stops,” is a mainstay attraction for touring westerners. It is a lively, active city with entertainment, culture and art, festivals and a rich nightlife.

Hebrew Script and Modern Writing

Modern Hebrew is written from right to left using the Hebrew alphabet. Modern scripts are based on the “square” letterform, known as Ashurit (Assyrian), which was developed from the Aramaic script. A cursive Hebrew script is used in handwriting, but the letters tend to be more circular in form when written in cursive, and sometimes vary markedly from their printed equivalents.
