Iran’s World Class Art and Architecture

Farsi is the official language of Iran and the American Diaspora community that heavily resides in the Southern California city of Irvine. Iran, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran and formerly known as Persia is a richly diverse country located on the northeastern shore of the Persian Gulf. One of the main developments after the advent of Islam in Iran was the rise of the new Persian language, an important Indo-European language. The New Persian language was an evolution of Middle Persian, which in turn was derived from Old Persian. The Culture of Iran is a mix of ancient pre-Islamic culture and Islamic culture. Iranian culture probably originated in Central Asia, this influence played a prominent role in the formation of both Asiatic and European medieval art. Art and architecture in Iran stems from one of the richest artistic traditions in world history because it encompasses many disciplines, including architecture, painting, weaving, pottery, calligraphy, literature and metalworking. Iran, although difficult to visit for western tourists, is a beautiful nation that, like its people, reserve a vitality for life not seen anywhere else in the world.

The Persian Alphabet and Script

Modern Iranian, Persian, and Dari are normally written using a modified variant of the Arabic alphabet with different pronunciation and more letters, whereas the Tajik variety is typically written in a modified version of the Cyrillic alphabet. Since the nineteenth century, Russian, French and English and many other languages have contributed to the technical vocabulary of Persian. The Iranian National Academy of Persian Language and Literature is responsible for evaluating these new words in order to initiate and advise their Persian equivalents. The language itself has greatly developed during the centuries. Due to technological developments, new words and idioms are created and enter into Persian as they do into any other language.

Farsi and Its Usage in The Diaspora Community

Large concentrations of Iranian Americans live in the state of California, particularly Beverly Hills, Los Angeles and Irvine, Orange County. This Diaspora community practices traditions such as Persian New Year which is a two week long celebration ending with a large Diaspora gathering at Mason Park in Irvine. Although the Diaspora community remains tied to their Iranian traditions, younger Persians relate heavily to the western culture of America. This unique mix of tradition and assimilation has built a strong community within Southern California. One such community, known as Turtle Rock, is a suburb of Irvine California and consists of over a hundred thousand Persian families in typical suburban homes. The use of Farsi is widespread and even vital among the wealthy Persian Jews who reside in Beverly Hills. Because 50% Iranian Americans hold a bachelor degree (compared to 20% of other foreign-born population) they are extremely successful at starting business and one in three households have an annual income of more than $100K.
