The Edo Language in Nigeria

Edo is spoken in Nigeria, a federal constitutional republic comprising of thirty-six states and one Federal Capital Territory. The country is located in West Africa and shares land borders with Benin, Cameroon and Niger. Nigeria is known as the birthplace of human history, with archeological finds dating back to 9000 BCE. It is the most populous country in Africa and the eighth most populous country in the world. The culture of Nigeria has influenced many African states and other countries worldwide. Nigeria’s rich literary history, music and film are unique to its people and ideological taste. The cuisine of Nigeria is equally diverse and rich with its colorful and lavish feasts cooked with an abundance of spices and different types of oils. This may explain why in 2003 a survey of 65 nations reported Nigerians to be the happiest people in the world.

Edo Script and The Chromatographic System

Edo (or, with the tone marks: d, also called Bini or Benin) is a Benue-Congo language spoken primarily in Edo State, Nigeria. It was and remains the primary language of the Bini people also known as the Edo or Benin. Edo script uses a chromatographic system of writing developed by Edo people of southern Nigeria. It is a writing based on graphs of different color and shape combinations.

The Sounds and Stress of Edo Language

If you’re a native English speaker and you look at Edo the words may look recognizable, in actuality, the words are markedly different through pronunciation. The rhotic pronunciation causes some English speakers to believe Edo sounds similar to a West Country accent. Edo is a stress language; the stress position of words matters. Stress can occur on any syllable position in a word. There is a tendency for stress to be at the beginning of words. In composite words, secondary stress is often present. Understanding the stress and where it is used is paramount to pronouncing words correctly and understanding them.
