The Global Humanitarian Efforts To Aid Sudan
Spoken by the Dinka one of the largest and most powerful ethnic groups in Sudan the Dinka language has 2-3 million speakers and exists in five major dialect divisions. Sudan is an unstable country, mostly due to its rocky history extending from antiquity and intertwined politically with several nations over a period of time. Sudan’s modern history has been plagued by civil wars stemming from ethnic, religious, and economic conflict between Black Africans of the Arabized largely Muslim north, and the non-Arabized religiously diverse Christian, animist and Muslim south. Sudan is a main focus of Humanitarian efforts and it is acknowledged globally to have some of the worst health care in the world. Child mortality rates are at the highest and disease runs rampant throughout the region. In July 2007, many parts of the country were devastated by flooding, prompting an immediate humanitarian response by the United Nations and partners. Sudan remains at the forefront of humanitarian efforts and it is essential to communicate properly with locals in order to streamline efforts. American Language Services is equipped with the best translators and native Dinka speakers to make the process as seamless as possible.
Linguistic Features of Dinka
Dinka has a rich vowel system, with at least thirteen phonemically contrastive vowels. The underdots indicate “breathy” vowels, represented in Dinka orthography by diaereses. There may be other distinctions. The Bor (southeastern) dialect is known to contrast modal voice, breathy voice, faucalized voice, and harsh voice in its vowels, in addition to its three tones. The ad hoc diacritics employed in the literature are a subscript double quotation mark for faucalized voice and an underline for harsh voice.
The Dialects and Alphabet of Dinka
There are five main diaelcts of Dinka: Padang, Ruweng, Agar, Bor, Rek. Each Dialect is specific to its geographical region in Sudan. The Dinka alphabet is Latin based and uses the latest variant unchanged since the early 20th century.
