April Fools’ Day is one of the most light-hearted days of the year. Its origins are very uncertain. Some see it as a celebration related to the turn of the seasons, while others believe it stems from the adoption of a new calendar. Others see it as simply a fun day to be mischievous and play jokes on one another. With another April Fools’ Day upon us, many of us will be gingerly walking around in the hopes of avoiding the office prankster or the funny family member or friends. We all hope that the jokes that are played are taken in the humorous way they are intended and don’t actually cause hurt feelings or harm.
Having fun at work is important! It helps build culture, boosts morale, reduces stress and breaks up the busy work day with the added bonus of hilarity and laughter for all. There is perhaps no better day of the year to have fun at work than April 1st. April Fools’ Day that is, loved by some, hated by many. Of course, that probably depends on which side of the prank you’re on. It’s also the one day out of the year when people at work are a little edgier, suspicious, and skeptical.
It has not escaped from notice that in spite of having fun, American Language services is also very serious about the work it does and have accomplished many important projects in April. Some of the projects we completed are American Sign Language and Spanish Interpreting for First 5 LA, Romanian Interpreting for US Department of Justice, and Spanish interpreting with equipment rental like headsets, receivers and encapsulated booths for the Department of Toxic Substance Control. Language is not an exact science, it’s more of a science combined with art. It doesn’t take much contemplation to reach the conclusion that the ability to communicate clearly is not as common as is often assumed, especially when it comes to conveying complex concepts or technical jargon from one language to another. Our professional interpreters, who are native speakers, immerse themselves in both cultures so as to do justice to the language as it’s of no use knowing a language if you don’t know the cultural meaning behind it.
In addition American Language Services was also involved in multiple document translation assignments. One of them was an interesting assignment completed for our client Zebra Technology. In this job AML-Global translated highly technical and important documents into German, European French, Simplified Chinese, Italian, and Spanish. A translator’s role is pivotal in conveying the proper message that is intended by the writer. They must work with great accuracy, appropriate speed and be localized correctly for the target audience. Our translators are native speakers/writers of the target language so they can understand regional colloquialisms being used and are familiar with local dialects in order to convey the intended message.
