A project that needs to be completed before the standard allotted days (2,000-3,000 words per day) is considered a rush project. Procrastination is a part of life, and therefore, rush projects are a reality of the translation industry every day. Many companies do not have the luxury of time. Some projects that need to be completed shortly before the standard time frame may not qualify as a rush if the translator is willing to take on that project within the given time frame under his/her normal rates. However, many rush projects also come with an increased rate. Rush rates are generally 10%-20% higher in cost than standard turnaround projects depending on how big the project is and how quickly the project needs to be completed. All of the factors that are taken into account with standard turnaround projects also apply to rush projects with one major difference: time restraints should be given top priority. The project manager dedicated to a rush project must use their time management skills to the best of their abilities since time is the major factor. The quality assurance process is usually cut short in these instances so time must be used wisely. Rush orders are treated with urgency on all fronts without sacrificing personalized service.
The increase in price for rush projects is based on how close the deadline is and the length of the project. For example, for a 24 hour turnaround time, the cost of translation for a 5,000 word document and the cost for a 10,000 word document may be dramatically different. Both projects would be considered a rush, but the higher word count to be completed within a short turnaround time is certainly a challenge to complete and the cost will reflect that. In some cases, extreme rush projects may be sourced to several translators in order to meet the time restraints. However, it is not always ideal to breakup a project since consistency problems may become an issue. All translators have their own specific method of completing a project which may not be consistent with that of their colleagues. All translations should be done cohesively and remain consistent throughout the document. Therefore, sourcing an extreme rush project to several different translators may only be applied when a client approved of this method and is aware of the issues that may come with using more than one translator.
