Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2016, Monday, Jan. 18, honors the slain civil rights icon near what would have been is 87th birthday. It is a legal holiday and many businesses and public services will be closed or will operate on a holiday schedule in observance of this important day. The holiday has been officially observed since 1986, after a multi-year campaign by black and white lawmakers in Congress and American students around the country.
