Types of Sign Language in NYC

American Sign Language is widely used in NYC and surrounding cities such as Manhattan Island, Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. As of now, there are three types of significant sign languages used in the United States: Signed Exact English(SEE), American Sign Language(ASL), and Pidgin Signed English(PSE). There is a brief discussion on those below.

Pidgin Signed English (PSE) or Signed English

PSE is probably the most widely used communication mode in the United States among deaf and hearing persons who work with them. It is a combination of American Sign Language and English. Pidgin Signed English (PSE) is a system, and ASL is a language. PSE takes ASL signs, and puts them in English word order, usually without English articles (a, the), and without suffixes (-ing, -ment, etc.). Plurals are done in the ASL way, with repetition of the sign rather than by adding an s.PSE is most frequently used by those who use spoken English as their primary language.

American Sign Language (ASL) in NYC

ASL has a basic structure such as TIME+TOPIC+COMMENT. Many hearing-impaired people use this.NYCis a strong example of a thriving deaf community. Verbal communication and hearing aptitude are not a factor because ASL is sign based language. In the United States, ASL is the most common sign language used among the Deaf. The syntax and grammar are distinct from other spoken languages, including English.

Signing Exact English (SEE)

Just like it says, this is a system that matches sign language to the exact English translation. SEE is based upon signs drawn from ASL and expanded with words, prefixes, tenses, and endings to give a clear and complete visual presentation of English. Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) is a sign language system that represents literal English. It is a tool to make visible everything that is not heard. SEE encourages the incorporation of ASL features to show intonation. SEE requires more signing time that PSE, because of the word endings and prefixes, etc.
