Las Vegas: Consecutive or Simultaneous Interpretation

Las Vegas: Consecutive or Simultaneous Interpretation

On a daily basis AML-Global gets thousands of inquiries that require interpreters in Las Vegas for a conference of some sort. Over the years, we have come across people who still dont have a clear understanding of consecutive and simultaneous interpretation; this includes individuals taking part in events and in the conference industry. Please allow us to explain the differences between the two in this article.

What is Consecutive Interpretation

It is best to opt for consecutive interpreting when interpreting is required in only one foreign language within a small groups of people. Consecutive interpreting happens when the interpreter waits for the speaker to finish formulating his or hers ideas and then renders the speakers words into the target language.

For example, if you are holding a business meeting somewhere in Las Vegas where most of the attendees are English speakers, but you have one Spanish speaking attendee a consecutive interpreter would be appropriate. Other examples of where consecutive interpreting would be appropriate is for medical consultations or interviews.

What is Simultaneous Interpretation

Simultaneous interpreting means interpreting while the speaker is speaking. The interpreter is then placed in a booth (usually they are a team of 2 interpreters) and they are speaking through a microphone and the audience listens to what is being said in their own languages through headsets.

Every year many multi-lingual conferences are hosted in Las Vegas. Some of the instances of simultaneous interpreting are interpreting at a conferences, lectures, presentations or during high-profile trials in court.

In short, consecutive is stop-and-start while simultaneous is  continuous

Which type of interpreter do you need

It is obvious from the discussion above, that the type of interpreter (and the number of them) will depend upon the kind of assignment you are having.

In summary, one should always go with simultaneous interpreter if the conference is large featuring keynote addresses from stage. On the other hand, if it is a small meeting which is interactive in nature then consecutive interpreters could be the most preferable.
