Mandingo Language

The Mandinka language, sometimes referred to as Mandingo, is a Mand language spoken by millions of Mandinka people in Mali, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea and Ivory Coast. t belongs to the Manding branch of Mand, and is thus fairly similar to Bambara and Maninka or Malink. In a majority of areas, it is tonal language with two tones: low and high, although the particular variety spoken in Gambia and Senegal is non-tonal and uses a pitch accent.

Mandingo and Mali

Mali, officially the Republic of Mali is a landlocked nation in Western Africa. Mali is the seventh largest country in Africa, bordering Algeria on the north, Niger on the east, Burkina Faso and the Cte d’Ivoire on the south, Guinea on the south-west, and Senegal and Mauritania on the west. Consisting of eight regions, Mali’s borders on the north reach deep into the middle of the Sahara, while the country’s southern region, where the majority of inhabitants live, features the Niger and Senegal rivers. The country’s economic structure centers on agriculture and fishing. Some of Mali’s natural resources include gold, uranium, and salt. Mali is considered to be one of the poorest nations in the world.

Orthography of Mandingo

Latin alphabet and Arabic alphabet-based orthographies are widely used for Mandinka; the former is official, but the latter is more widely used and older. In addition, the pan-Mand writing system, the N’Ko alphabet, invented in 1949, is often used in Northeast Guinea, and bordering communities in Cte d’Ivoire and Mali.
