Mianyang is the second-largest prefecture-level city of Sichuan province in Southwest China. Its population was 5.45 million in 2015 covering an area of 20,281 square kilometers consisting of Jiangyou, a county-level city, six counties and two urban districts. Mianyang is an important science and technology centre in the province, and it has several universities and colleges and many research institutions. The city was severely damaged by a powerful earthquake in Sichuan in 2008, which killed thousands of people and left tens of thousands homeless. Pop.
