Sweden: Science and Technology

Swedish is the national language of Sweden, a Nordic country on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. Sweden has land borders with Norway to the west and Finland to the northeast, and it is connected to Denmark by the ?resund Bridge in the south. Being an advanced industrial nation, research plays a key role for economic development as well as for society at large, Sweden’s high-quality scientific and technological development is renowned throughout the world. Altogether, the public and the private sector in Sweden allocate nearly four per cent of GDP to research & development (R&D), which makes Sweden one of the countries that invest most in R&D in terms of percentage of GDP. The standard of Swedish research is high and Sweden is a world leader in a number of important fields. Sweden tops Europe in comparative statistics both in terms of research investments as a percentage of GDP and in the number of published scientific works per capita.

Swedish Dialects

The traditional definition of a Swedish dialect has been a local variant that has not been heavily influenced by the standard language and that can trace a separate development all the way back to Old Norse. Many of the genuine rural dialects, such as those of Orsa in Dalarna or N?rpes in ?sterbotten, have very distinct phonetic and grammatical features, such as plural forms of verbs or archaic case inflections. These dialects can be near-incomprehensible to a majority of Swedes, and most of their speakers are also fluent in Standard Swedish.

The Swedish Writing System

Though these combinations are historically modified versions of A and O according to the English range of usage for the term diacritic, these 3 characters are not considered as diacritics within the Swedish application but considered separate letters, and are sorted in that order following z as independent letters.
