ARIZONA INTERPRETING SERVICES
Interpreting in Arizona
For a large portion of Arizona’s existence as a state it has remained sparsely settled. However, the population of the Phoenix metropolitan area has increased by 45.3% from 1991 through 2001, helping make Arizona the second fastest growing state in the nation in the 1990s. With its near proximity to Mexico this boost in population continues to increase providing a booming business industry, and in turn bringing a higher demand for interpreting and translating services than ever before. Whether one is need of conference, court, legal, or medical interpreting, Arizona has increasingly developed a broader need for these services.
Court Interpreting in Arizona
Interpreters are provided for limited and non-English speakers in all criminal cases, and they receive priority over civil and domestic matters. Currently, Arizona State courts do not require interpreter certification, but education, training or other credentials in court interpreting as well as deposition, hearing and arbitration settings are required. In civil matters, interpreters are provided for probate, domestic relations, and forcible detainer hearings under certain circumstances: The Arizona Court Interpreters Association is the only statewide court interpreter association in Arizona. The majority of current members are practicing interpreters and translators who provide language services to the various court systems in 14 spoken languages and American Sign Language.
