Azarbaijan and Northwest Iran in History and Poetry

The Middle East and Central Asia, specifically Iran, shares a number of different languages within its geographical location. Azari is the name used for the Iranian language composed of groups of dialects, which were spoken in Azerbaijan (northwest region of Iran). This area shares the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan, known for its natural beauty with 17 rivers and two lakes in a landlocked desert area. The freshwater lakes bring this region cotton, nuts, textiles, tea and other valuables that were traded alongside the Silk Road. Azerbaijan is known for its numerous fire temples and was once heralded as the birthplace of life, and fire and the prophet Zoroaster. Although Azerbaijani language is not an official language it is widely used, mostly in an oral tradition, among the Azeris in Iran. Many poets that came from Azerbaijan wrote poetry in both Persian and Azerbaijani. Many well known and celebrated poets hail from this region including Fuzuli and Mohammad Hossein Shahriar. The rich Iranian history stemming from this province is celebrated favorably in Persian literature and Iran’s greatest poets.

The Complexities of the Azari Dialect

The Azari language is believed to be a part of the dialect continuum of other Northwest Iranian languages. Azari was spoken in most of Azarbaijan up to the 17th century. While some scholars believe that these dialects form a direct continuation of the ancient Azari languages, others have argued that they are likely to be a later import through migration from other parts of Iran, and that the original Azari dialects became extinct. Because the Azari dialect is so old, there are extant words, phrases and sentences attested in the old Iranic dialect. By the late 1800s, the Turkification of Azerbaijan was near completion with the old Iranic speakers found solely in tiny isolated recesses of the mountains or other remote areas.

The Changing Alphabet of Azari

Although the Republic of Azerbaijan uses the Latin alphabet, the Cyrillic alphabet is also in wide use today. Interestingly, the Azari alphabet has changed more than any other country, using four different scripts in the 20th century alone. Because of this complex change in word usage, alphabet and dialects it is essential to have a certified, field tested translator that American Language Services can provide.
