The month of October

Get out your best costume, start prepping the decoration and get ready to eat a lot of candy because this month screams HAPPY HALLOWEEN! We are entering the 10th month of the year where autumn comes into full swing, the leaves are changing colors and falling off the trees, the weather is perfect for going on walks and the possibility of making a lot of different plans with friends are family sounds amazing. Baking something in the kitchen, pumpkin craving, or bonfires with smore’s are some of the best ideas for this time of the year. This month is also packed with tons of holidays, here are just some of them: October 10 is a busy month with three holidays happening at the same time:

We have the Canadian Thanksgiving, a holiday that shares many similarities with its American equivalent.

Columbus Day (U.S.), a federal holiday, is observed on the second Monday in October. It was on October 12, 1492, that Christopher Columbus landed on a small island in the Bahamas, convinced that he had reached Asia. Read more about Columbus Day.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day (U.S.)—a holiday that celebrates the history and cultures of indigenous peoples native to what is today the United States. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is celebrated in cities and states across the country, often alongside or in lieu of Columbus Day. Read more about Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

October 24, in which we celebrate United Nations Day, aiming to bring awareness to the work of the United Nations across the world. On Monday 25, 1,200 scientists, representatives of the private sector and civil society met at UN Headquarters in New York on Monday to discuss potentially game-changing ideas related to water and sustainability. This was a big step forward into the climate change actions that we all need to take to develop more options for improving our ways to live, making them sustainable for the environment.

And of course, we have October 31, Halloween, used to be known as All Hallows’ Eve, do you know the origins of this holiday? It was once tied to farming and astronomy, marking the end of harvest season and the biggening of winter or “darker half” of the year. The origin of Halloween can be traced to an ancient festival called Samhain (pronounced sow-in, which rhymes with cow-in), meaning Summer’s End. This was a sacred festival celebrated by the ancient Celts and Druids in the British Isles. Talking about October 31, this year we witnessed a new digitalization effort in Bangladesh that could change community health globally. The digital transformation of thousands of community health workers in Bangladesh has dramatically enhanced their work and enabled the creation and tracking of a healthcare database covering 64 million people. The resulting model holds remarkable promise for the health of the world, especially in the context of evolving pandemics.
