November2020: As the Year Winds Down…

November in our collective imagination is a time of falling leaves, stylish coats and a lot of hot chocolate drinks. But all that glitters is not gold and it is well known that during this month the temperatures drop drastically in parts of the U.S. Despite this, our country has been enveloped by a strange wave of heat, both in climate and the one provided by the recent elections! While it is not official yet, it looks like Joe Biden will have his place in History 46th President of the United States. This election, even with all its divisiveness, had more voters than ever before in U. S history with over 161 million people voting. The elections are not the only event that marks the month of November, it is also represented by two important holidays in the States: Veteran day’s and Thanksgiving.

Veterans Day (originally known as Armistice Day) is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11, for honoring military veterans, who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Thanksgiving is considered a national holiday in the United States and its origins are founded in the XV century when the pilgrims gathered to give thanks for the food and plentiful harvest. The story goes that the pilgrims were helped by the native Indians to get through the winter season by providing them with food, like corn, wheat, barley and other crops, as well as turkey that has become the traditional main protein source which you can find in nearly every American table. The traditional feast is turkey, stuffing, sweet & mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, green beans and of course pumpkin pie for desert. President George Washington on November 26, 1789 held Thanksgiving as a festivity day; that is a day of prayer and public thanksgiving in gratitude for the successful establishment of the new American republic and the blessings in each of our lives.

November is also a month full of discoveries and historical events. The science field provided us with the precious discovery of X-rays made by the German scientist Wilhelm Röntgen and the discovery of the blood transfusions, initially tried on the dogs in 1665 by Physician Richard Lower. The discovery of the King’s Tut tomb in 1922, finding it miraculously intact was crucial for the archeologist and historians that found new information about the Egyptians. November brought also many historical events, one that will remain forever in our minds, president John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, Layla the dog, was the first living being in the space in 1957, the fall of the wall of Berlin in 1989 that marked the end of the Cold War, the election of the first African American President in the United States in 2008 was Barack Obama, and on a lighter note, November 30, 1982 Michael Jackson released “Thriller” that still remains one of the most famous and well-known albums of all the times.

On the Covid front, we have some better news. Several new vaccines were tested on a great number of volunteers and produced very positive results which consists of the 90+ % of effectiveness! Scientist all over the world are optimistic and say that the vaccine will be released before the years is out. In the U.S. experts expect that millions will be taking the vaccine in the next 3-4 months. In the meantime, let us just continue to wear a mask, follow the rules and enjoy the little things of our lives and try to stay active and positive.
