Bangladesh and its Tug-Of-War With Nature

Native to the beautiful Bengal region of South Asia is Bengali. Bangladesh is the seventh most populous country in the world and is among the most densely populated also. Most parts of Bangladesh are less than 39 feet above sea level, making it extremely susceptible to flooding if waters were to rise even 3 feet. Bangladesh is now widely recognized to be one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change. Natural hazards that come from increased rainfall, sea level rise, and tropical cyclones are expected to increase as climate change, each seriously affecting agriculture, water & food security, human health and shelter. Interestingly, Bangladesh is one of the few geographical regions where the weather impacts the economic growth of the region. In no other place can a flood or cyclone have such a devastating impact on the macro-economy of a nation than Bangladesh. Its susceptibility to flooding and natural disasters makes this a hot spot for caregivers and world health organizations. American Language Services is here to provide the most skilled translators for your needs.

The Seventh Most Spoken Language in The World: Bengali

The primary language of Bangladesh, Bengali is native to the region of eastern South Asia known as Bengal, which comprises present day Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. There are also a significant number of Bengali speakers in the Indian states of Assam and Tripura. With nearly 230 million total speakers, Bengali is one of the most spoken languages in the world. Because of the location of Bangladesh and its long history of trade with Asia and Eastern Europe, Bengali serves to bind together a culturally divers region. Regional variation in spoken Bengali can be narrowed down to four major dialects Rarh, Banga, Kamarupa and Varendra.

The Bengali Alphabet

In 1923, a writing system based on the Arabic script was specifically created for the Bengali language. At the same time, a Bengali literary language was created, moving away from the Tatar influences. At first, it used a modified Arabic alphabet. In 1930 it was replaced with a Latin-based alphabet, which was in turn replaced with an adapted Cyrillic alphabet in winter of 1938.

A Fusion Writing System

Bengali writing systems fuses two styles of alphabet-based writing: Latin script and Eastern Nagari script. The Eastern Nagari script is used primarily in the West Bengal region while the Latin script is used in the Southern and Eastern region. The concept of capitalization is absent in Bengali writing system. There is no variation in initial, medial and final forms as in the Arabic script. The letters run from left to right on a horizontal line, and spaces are used to separate orthographic words.
