South Africa and its Natural Beauty

South Africa, known for its beauty, rich history and diversity sits on the southern end of Africa and is host to the 2010 World Cup. Although English is the most commonly spoken language, Afrikaans plays an integral part to the daily life of locals. The thriving tourist industry depends mainly on the natural beauty of South Africa and the multitude of different adventures one can enjoy. Like many multi-cultural destinations, South Africa has something for just about anyone with a touch of local hospitality. Don’t forget to take in the exquisite barbeque South Africa has to offer known as braii, guaranteed to make your mouth water.

The Historical Origins of Afrikaans

Afrikaans is the language of South Africa, with smaller numbers of speakers spread across Australia, New Zealand and parts of the United States. Afrikaans developed among the Dutch and the language grew through trade and the arrival of slaves in the Cape. The language was spread mainly due to emigration and migrant labor. Despite attempts to keep the language as one of the official languages of South Africa, the Constitutional Assembly in the democratic South African republic chose to downgrade Afrikaans to one of eleven languages.

Afrikaans Writing System as a Melting Pot of Languages

Afrikaans, like South Africa, is a melting pot of languages combined into a singular dialect. Afrikaans retains some features of 18th century Dutch, together with vocabulary from Bantu and Portuguese language. In Afrikaans grammar, there is little distinction between the infinitive and present forms of verbs. In addition, verbs do not conjugate differently depending on subject. Interestingly, all letters of the Latin alphabet are acceptable in the Afrikaans language, though the vowel diacritics differ from English language.
