The Presidential election is finally over, and people can finally start concentrated on other important matters. We can see the light at the end of the Tunnel, with Covid, and expect by no later than the beginning of the summer, everything will be opened back up. February traditionally has many important festivities around the world. In China, the New Year’s Eve is celebrated and this festivity throughout the years also started to have a great impact outside China due to the migrants that live around the world who brought this tradition with them. Another festivity that is celebrated all around the globe is the colorful Carnival. Even if the most famous one takes place in Rio de Janeiro, its origins are to be found in the Ancient Rome empire. Another important celebration takes place on the 14th of February and is known as San Valentine’s day, during this day couples celebrate their love with flowers, chocolates or simply each other company.

February is also a month packed with important historical events that involves politics, economic and scientific matters. In this regard, the long journey for citizens’ rights was taken in 1870 with the 15th Amendment ratified in the Constitution which guaranteed the right of citizens to vote, regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. In the same year, Hiram Rhodes Revels became the first African American Senator. Years later, in South Africa, after fighting for people of color’s rights and spending 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela was released and four years later in April 1994, he was elected president in the first all-race elections.

Another event that changed the political landscape in Great Britain, after the second world war, was the death of King George VI of England. Upon his death, his daughter Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. She is the longest royal in the British history of its monarchy and to this day she continues to have a great world influence. In regard to innovation and technologies, during this month Mendel released his inheritance theory, the structure of the DNA was discovered, the Metropolitan Museum of New York was inaugurated, the Lumiere brothers patented the cinematograph and decades later YouTube was invented along with the creation of Facebook by Mark Zuckerberg.

FEBRUARY 4, 1913: ROSA PARKS – The “mother of the freedom movement” became a Civil Rights icon when she refused to move to the back of an Alabama bus in 1955. With her gestures she started a serious of rebellious actions that lead colored people to finally have their human rights recognized and to be included fully in the society.

FEBRUARY 6, 1911: RONALD REGAN: He was the40th U.S. President, was born in Tampico, Illinois. Reagan spent 30 years as an entertainer in radio, film, and television before becoming governor of California in 1966. Elected to the White House in 1980, he survived an assassination attempt and became the most popular president since Franklin Roosevelt.

FEBRUARY 8, 1931: JAMES DEAN: His beauty made a lot of girls go crazy over him, and he catapulted to fame by the movie “Rebel Without a Cause” for which he is mostly remembered. He became an icon and still nowadays women from all over the world keep considering him as a sex symbol, even if he tragically died only at the age of 24 in a car accident.

FEBRUARY 11, 1847: THOMAS ALVA EDISON: Considered as one of the greatest inventors of the last century, he made great contributions to science. Inventions such as the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and early versions of the electric light bulb belongs to him and were the beginning of an important industrialization phase that lead to our moderns comforts such as the electricity.

Some Interesting Translation, Interpreting, & Media Projects Completed in February

Even if February is the shortest month of the year, we did a tremendous volume of work this month. For the medical field, our translation department provided the translation of hospital and disease information in more than 10 languages for the statewide University of California Hospital System. The languages included were Korean, Hebrew, Arabic, and Vietnamese to name some. They also translated information for use (IFU) manuals for a leading medical device company into EU French, Arabic, Finnish, Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Norwegian, Swedish and Italian. Also, they translated a 350,000-word federal training manual for a major university into Spanish, and they also provided the translation of over 100,00 words of Spanish, Vietnamese, Amharic, and Arabic for one of the world’s leading engineering consulting companies. The topic of this work was studies on workplace environments. For a worldwide entity promoting and facilitating child welfare and adoption throughout the globe they translated a 135,000-word planning module into EU French, and they provided the translation for multiple legal cases into Swedish, Italian, Chinese, French and Greek for international service for a major legal services company.

The media department had been also busy with a variety of projects, they provided two days of real time captioning (CART) for The National Academy of Science for a panel meeting, transcribed 7 hours of English interviews for a national recovery center and for a Major University provided Arabic subtitling for a series of biochemical training videos.

The interpreting department also had brisk business both on-site and for video remote projects. They provided multiple on-site American Sign Language interpreters for 6 days for the world’s biggest automaker for a training program. Also, they completed several legal projects including one for a series of ongoing legal reform seminars happening around the world. They provided virtual simultaneous Romanian and Azeri interpreting to the Federal Government. The department also provided video remote interpreting (VRI) services to dozens of school districts and universities across the nation, in more than 25 languages and for a strategic planning meeting they provided Virtual Simultaneous Mandarin interpreting to the International Academy of New York.
