We are entering the fifth month of the year in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and the third of seven months to have a length of 31 days. May, in Latin, Maius, was named after the Greek goddess Maia, who was identified with the Roman era goddess of fertility, Bona Dea, whose festival was held in May. This name changed over the years; it was first called May in the 1400s, near the end of Middle Ages. As the the third and last month of Spring, May typically marks the start of summer vacation season in the United States. Conversely, the Roman poet, Ovid, provides a second etymology, in which he says that the month of May is named for the maiores, Latin for “elders”, and that the following month, June, is named for the juniors, or “young people”. In many countries, May Day and Labor Day are both celebrated on May 1, originating as International Worker’s Day. This holiday stems from unions fighting for an eight-hour work day. After a scandalous demonstration known as the Haymarket Riot on May 4th, 1886, Chicago’s workers’ union started their annual protests on May 1, 1889.

May hosts a variety of holidays and celebrations. Among them, we have International Astronomy Day, Press Freedom Day, the World Laughter Day, World Asthma Day, and Mother’s Day. Over the course of history, May saw many important and remarkable events, like when Christopher Columbus discovered Jamaica during his second journey of exploration in the New World, or when the Wall Street Crash of 1893 began as stock prices fell dramatically. By the end of the year, 600 banks closed, and several big railroads were in receivership. It was considered the worst economic crisis in U.S history up to that time. May was also the month in which the 27th amendment to the U.S  Constitution was ratified, prohibiting Congress from giving themselves pay rises.

For those who are interested in cinematographic references, maybe it is obvious that May 4th is known as the Star Wars Day, named after the well-known phrase from Star Wars: “May the force be with you” which phonetically resembles “May the Fourth.” We also know Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth day of May, as the  celebration of the defeat of the French army during the Batalla de Puebla (Battle of Puebla) in Mexico, which took place on May 5, 1862. In the United States, this date celebrates the culture, achievements, and experiences of people with a Mexican background.

On the last Monday of the month, known as Memorial Day, the people of the United States remember and mourn the soldiers and military personnel who died in military service. It is a federal holiday and seen as the start of summer.

As a random fact, May used to be considered an unlucky month to get married- there’s actually a famous poem that says: “Get married in May and you will rue the day”.
