March 2022

March, named after the Roman god of war Mars, is the third month of the year. However, it hasn’t always been so. In the early Roman calendar, March was the first month of the year as it symbolized new beginnings because it brought spring with the vernal equinox. March was also the time of year when military campaigns resumed as they were put to a halt because of winter. For us, March brings new beginnings as well. Besides the obvious changes in time and weather, it also brings a sense of tranquility and hope, as well as tons of reasons to celebrate. March provides a variety of holidays and celebrations. Among those, we can count Mardi Gras, Clean Monday, International Women’s Day, and St. Patrick’s Day. Changes also happen to time as Daylight Saving Time and the March equinox occur during this month. Other “fun” days include National Umbrella Day, National Panda Day, World Meteorological Day, and National Earmuff Day, among others.

The world political sphere experience¬d many events that shaped its history. During this month, the Nazi invasion of Austria and the abolishment of slave trade in the UK were some key events in European history. Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary became full NATO members. The Soviet Republic of Georgia also voted to declare independence from Russia, and similar proceedings were happening in the Baltic countries. Another independence quest was also coming from the Philippine Islands in the South Pacific as they gained independence by President Franklin D. Roosevelt after being under American control for nearly 50 years. In the United States, the formal ratification of the Articles of Confederation was announced by Congress. Peace Corps was also established during this month by President John F. Kennedy. Another former president, John Quincy Adams, returned to Congress as a representative from Massachusetts and was the first ex-president in history to return to the House and served 8 consecutive terms. Another first in American history was the meeting of U.S. Congress under the new U.S. Constitution which happened in New York City. The U.S. government’s first issue of paper money occurred as $5, $10, and $20 bills began circulation.

Other interesting historical events include the assassination of Julius Caesar in the Senate chamber in Rome and the lifting of the 5-month-old Arab oil embargo against the U.S.in 1973. It also happened that during this month, the largest oil spill in U.S. history occurred as an oil tanker ran underground, resulting in the leak of 11 million gallons into the natural habitat. In Europe, the Church of England ordained 32 women as its first female priests, a move which saw the protest and leave of 700 men which turned to the Roman Catholic Church which did not allow female priests. Israel and Egypt also saw improvement in their diplomatic relations as the Camp David Accord ended 30 years of warfare between the two countries. The Civil Conversation Corps was founded which provided employment opportunities for citizens. However, fatalities also occurred as a nerve gas attack happened during rush hour resulting in the death of 12 persons and 5,000 injured. Civil aviation saw its worst accident as two Boeing 1747 jets collided on the ground in the Canary Islands resulting in 570 deaths.
