At American Language Services we pride ourselves on our can-do attitude. We are proud to say that we can accomplish any job a client has for us. We have thousands of skilled and experienced translators, editors, and interpreters on hand to serve your language needs, and our sourcing department is one of the best in the world at finding any language, any time.
At times, however, our resourcefulness is tested. The world is full of rare languages. Unique languages are constantly being discovered as we learn more and more about the rare cultures across the globe. At the most recent count, that number was nearing 7,000. However, half of the world’s population speaks one of the 13 most popular languages.
This month, a client brought us a real challenge. They needed a large document translated into two rare languages from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Tshiluba (also known as Ciluba, Luba-Kasai, Luba-Lulua, and Kikasai) is a national language of Congo and a member of the Bantu family, with an estimated 6.3 million speakers. That is 0.06% the size of the Mandarin Chinese speaking population!
Tetela (also known as Otetela, Kitetela, Kikitatela, and Sungu), another Bantu sub-language is even rarer, with a mere 760,000 speakers in the world. And we had to find both.
Those may seem like large numbers, but bear in mind that we needed individuals who knew both the source and the target languages at a high enough level to do professional translation with a high degree of confidence.
We are proud to say that we came through with flying colors ‘ the documents were delivered without a hitch, and no indication of the behind-the-scenes work that goes into finding qualified translators of exotic languages. While other companies are content to deal with the easiest and most common languages, American Language Services welcomes the challenge and embraces the diversity of languages across the globe.
American Language Services is a proud provider of translation, interpretation, transcription and media services to, private industry government at all levels, education and non-profit organizations. Our thousands of linguists around the world and teams of dedicated professionals are ready to serve.
