MISSOURI INTERPRETING SERVICES

Interpreting in Missouri

Missouri is the 18th most populous state in the country and has had significant population change over the last 20 years. The Hispanic population continues to increase as do other groups. There are 40,000 Bosnian immigrants in the St Louis area alone. While English remains commonly spoken in the business world there continues to be diverse language needs in the state of Missouri. Access to a qualified interpretation service can be vital in a host of Arena’s. Missouri provides the necessary interpreting services for the community, giving those with limited English proficiency a chance to facilitate the difficulties brought about by the language barrier. Missouri is highly regulated when it comes to interpreting. One must be licensed and certified to practice anywhere within the state, creating high quality service particularly in the legal and medical fields.

Court-Certified Interpreters

As populations shift the need for legal interpreting is growing steadily. Trials, arbitrations and hearings require experienced and trained professionals. The Missouri Interpreters Certification System (MICS) is a quality assurance screening system that is used to certify interpreters within the State of Missouri. Certification is obtained through a written test and a performance test. Each performance test is evaluated by a team of trained evaluators on a number of factors and the candidate receives one of five certification levels based on their skill. The MICS is governed by the Board for Certification of Interpreters. MICS certifications may be used by the State Committee of Interpreters to satisfy requirements for licensing..

Medical Interpreting in Missouri

Language barriers in health care settings can decrease access to quality care and diminish comprehension for limited English proficient patients (LEP). These barriers compromise quality of care, and increase costs and inefficiencies. Now, the University Of Missouri Institute Of Public Policy, Center for Health Policy and Missouri Telehealth Network are partnering with the Language Access Metro Project (LAMP) and the Missouri Primary Care Association to provide medical interpreters to non-English-speaking patients who otherwise might not have access to live interpreters. The Missouri Telehealth Interpretation Project will provide interpreters, free of charge for two years, to health care providers through the Missouri Telehealth Network.
