The Taiwanese language is unique and has very specific origins and characteristics.

Taiwanese Culture

The cultures of Taiwan are a hybrid blend of Japanese, Confucianist Han Chinese cultures, European, American, global, local and indigenous influences which are both interlocked and divided between perceptions of tradition and modernity. After the escape to Taiwan, the Kuomintang imposed an official interpretation of traditional Chinese culture over Taiwanese cultures. The government launched a program promoting Chinese calligraphy, traditional Chinese painting, folk art, and Chinese opera. Since the Taiwan localization movement of the 1990’s, Taiwan’s cultural identity has enjoyed greater expression. Identity politics, along with the over one hundred years of political separation from mainland China has led to distinct traditions in many areas, including cuisine and music.

Taiwanese Phonology

Phonologically, Minnan is a tonal language with extensive tone sandhi rules. Syllables consist maximally of an initial consonant, a vowel, a final consonant, and a tone; any or all of the consonants or vowels may be nasal.

Taiwanese Classification

Taiwanese Minnan is a variant of Min Nan, closely related to the Amoy dialect. It is often seen as a Chinese dialect within the larger Sinitic language family. On the other hand, it may also be seen as a language in the Sino-Tibetan family. As with most “language/dialect” distinctions, how one describes Taiwanese depends largely on one’s political views.
