The Cultural Diversity of Indonesia
Indonesian is the official national language of Indonesia. Indonesia is a transcontinental country in Southeast Asia and Oceania. Comprising 17,508 islands, it is the world's largest archipelagic state. Across its many islands, Indonesia consists of distinct ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. The Javanese are the largest and most politically dominant ethnic group. As a unitary state and a nation, Indonesia has developed a shared identity defined by a national language, ethnic diversity, religious pluralism within a majority Muslim population, and a history of colonialism and rebellion against it. Indonesia has over 300 different ethnic groups, each with its own cultural differences and influences. Because of this, Indonesia is naturally, a very diverse and accepting country. Tourism to Indonesia was on the decline but is back on the rise after a crime sweep by the government cleaned out a majority of rebels and drug dealers.
A Brief History of Indonesian
Indonesian is based on a version of Malay from the Riau islands in western Indonesia, today called Riau Indonesian. It was first declared the official language with the declaration of Indonesian independence in 1945. The diverse culture of Indonesia makes most Indonesians, aside from speaking the national language, are often fluent in another regional language or local dialect.
Gender in Indonesian Language
Generally Indonesian does not make use of grammatical gender, and there are only select words that use natural gender. A majority of Indonesian words that refer to people generally have a form that does not distinguish between the sexes. However, unlike English, distinction is made between older or younger
